In the local newspaper today in a small section there was a headline about “An unemployed engineer shot himself”. The news read “The guy graduated a year ago didn’t get any job and that eventually lead to his suicide”. He was barely 25 years old when he died. His father told the reporter that he had been seeing a doctor for a few months now. But yesterday morning he locked himself alone in the room and with a push of a trigger he ended his life. A life wasted another body down because of depression. The guy was Aizaz Ali from 34 ME, an EMEnent. Got to know about his death last night, felt sad for a moment and then life was just back to normal. But just 10 minutes ago I saw the newspaper headline and even though I wasn’t even aware of his existence the news of his suicide shook my bones. I couldn’t just believe it, a natural death or an accident is one thing but suicide is just… The fact that his suicide was a result of depression just made me want to write this article. We Pakistanis don’t consider depression as a disease, for us it is a phase, which you’ll get out of soon. But why did getting out this phase meant death for sir Aizaz? I read another news a few years ago about a guy from UET who killed himself because of depression, I asked my teacher about it this answer was the summary of the view our people have about depression “20-year olds don’t get depression, LARKI KA MAMLA HONA HA”. This is what our society thinks about depression and while hundreds of youngsters die because of it every year we are still not ready to change our perception about it. Talked to one of my seniors about him as I didn’t really know him that well. He told me about him a bit. “The guy was brilliant in Mechanical engineering stuff,” he said, “but even though he had a good GPA above 3 he didn’t have a job”. But the real thing that disturbed me when he said “but the real deal that I noticed was on convocation I met him and his parents and he barely seemed happy and maybe his parents weren't satisfied too. I said to his parents that day ‘he's intelligent and a hard worker’ and then I got a call from him that day he said ‘thank you yaar tunay izzat rakhli’ and I never got what he meant by this”. Looking at this picture just shatters my soul. Rest in peace sir Aizaz, I am sorry the system failed you. I am sorry societies expectations lead you to do this. I am sorry sir! I am sorry!
